Are you interested in your student taking the ASVAB?

Each fall, Owosso High School offers students the opportunity to explore their unique skills, work-related aptitudes, and potential careers by taking the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test. The ASVAB is a valuable assessment tool that allows students to evaluate their workplace skills. Subsequently, the results and interpretations will be provided to students, offering insights into their career aptitudes as they plan for life after high school.

In addition to helping students identify suitable career paths, the ASVAB results offer valuable information about areas in which they naturally excel. This knowledge can inform their decisions about further education or training beyond high school. Sign-up details are published early each fall, usually between September and early October. Please feel free to reach out to our counselors at any time to discuss this opportunity.
What is the ASVAB?

The ASVAB, or Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery, is a well-established aptitude test developed by the Department of Defense. It is offered to high schools nationwide free of charge and is designed to "help predict future academic and occupational success." After taking the test, students have the opportunity to participate in a post-test interpretation session. During this session, students can review their ASVAB scores in light of their interests and strengths. This post-test review provides an excellent chance to "explore numerous pathways to potentially fulfilling career fields" while planning for a career during and beyond high school.

On testing day, students must be in attendance on the day of their assessment, well rested, well nourished, and prepared to give their best effort. Smart watches, cell phones, laptops, Chromebooks, and other electronic devices are not allowed in the assessment rooms. All assessment related questions should be addressed to the assessment coordinator, Carrie Warning, warning@owosso.k12.mi.us.

Michigan Department of Education (MDE) uses the SAT as part of the Michigan Merit Examination (MME). The state also offers the PSAT 8/9 and PSAT 10 are free of charge each spring.

The SAT is accepted at all Michigan universities and is already a familiar test to many in the state. The test keeps pace with what colleges are looking for today, focusing on the few durable things that evidence shows matter most for college and career readiness and success. And it reflects what Michigan students are already learning in their classrooms.

"20 hours of practice on Khan Academy is associated with an average 115-point score increase from the PSAT/NMSQT to the SAT, nearly double the average gain without Khan. In 2017, Khan Academy and the College Board, the maker of the SAT, analyzed gains between the PSAT/NMSQT and the SAT and found a positive relationship between use of Official SAT Practice and score improvements on the SAT.
